Sunday School Lesson October 22, 2023
Subject: Are Miracles Relevant?
The Point: Miracles are acts of God that point to Jesus and glorify Him.
Scriptures: John 10:22-26; 14:8-14
Study The Bible: John 10:22-26
1). Miracles pointed to Jesus as God’s chosen Messiah.
- Then the Festival of Dedication took place in Jerusalem, and it was winter.
- Jesus was walking in the temple in Solomon’s Colonnade.
- The Jews surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”
- “I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works that I do in my Father’s name testify about me.
- But you don’t believe because you are not of my sheep.”
Lasting truths from: John 10:22-26
* Jesus reveals Himself through His teaching.
* The mighty works of Jesus testify to His being the Christ.
* How sad that some people choose to ignore the truth that Jesus has made known.
* Believing in Jesus is the path of having a right relationship with the Father.
2). Miracles pointed to the divinity of Jesus.
John 14:8-11
- “Lord,” said Philip, “show us the Father, and that’s enough for us.”
- Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father’?
- Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who lives in me does his works.
- Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Otherwise, believe because of the works themselves.
Lasting truths from: John 14:8-11
* The Lord reveals Himself to us in our daily walk with Him.
* We need to have eyes of faith to accept and trust what the Lord makes known.
* The authority behind Jesus’s words and works is God the Father.
* Jesus declared He and the Father were one in essence; Jesus was not a separate or secondary deity.
* The wonderful works of Jesus are a testimony to His divinity.
3). Jesus continues to work miraculously in us for God’s glory.
John 14:12-14
- “Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
- Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
- If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”
Lasting truths from: John 14:12-14
* The Lord has great expectations for His people to do great things for Him.
* The dynamic for doing the work of the Lord comes through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who Himself is God within us.
* Our prayers are effective when we pray in Jesus’s name, meaning according to His will, purpose, character, and authority.
* All that we do and all that we ask is to be for the glory of the Father.
* Jesus is still at work within all who believe to glorify the Father.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- Do you believe the Lord still does the miraculous? Why?
- Do you have a testimony of a mighty work of the Lord in your life?
- How did that action of the Lord bear witness to Jesus as the Christ, declare His divine holiness, and bring glory to His name?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
