Subject: Confidence in Seasons of Uncertainty

The Point: Trust God when you don’t have all the answers.  

The Passages: Genesis 15:1-6,13-16

Study The Bible: Genesis 15:1-5

1). Trust God even when the way is not clear.

1. After these events, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your reward will be very great.
2. But Abram said, “Lord God, what can you give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
3. Abram continued, “Look, you have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house will be my heir.”
4. Now the word of the Lord came to him: “This one will not be your heir.”
5. He took him outside and said, “Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “Your offspring will be that numerous.”

Lasting truths from: Genesis 15:1-5

* God is our shield in all we do.

* Sometimes we may not understand how God’s purpose for us makes sense.

* God is able to clarify His will when we diligently seek Him.

2). Trust in God results in righteousness.

Genesis 15:6

6. Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

Lasting truth from: Genesis 15:6

* We can believe God no matter what.

*  God rewards our trust in Him just as He did with Abram.

*  God counts us as righteous by grace through faith, just as he did with Abram.

3). Trust God to work in Him time.

Genesis 15:13-16

13. Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be resident aliens for four hundred years in a land that does not belong to them and will be enslaved and oppressed.
14. However, I will judge the nation they serve, and afterward they will go out with many possessions.
15. But you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age.
16. In the fourth generation they will return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”

Lasting truth from: Genesis 15:13-16

* God’s promise for our lives may include times of struggle.

*  God has promised He will be with us through our struggles, and in seasons of uncertainty.

* We can trust God because He sees the entire picture.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

1. What challenges(s) are you facing right now in your life where you can choose to trust God even though the way is not clear.
2. Read Genesis 15:5-6 slowly and reflectively, and ponder its significance. What extraordinary thing might God be asking you to believe so that He can unleash a great work through you?
3. What are some ways to pray for future generations of God’s people? What great work would you love for God to do through descendants you might never meet in this life?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
