Sunday School Lesson March 10, 2024
Subject: The Ministry of Jesus
The Point: Through His miracles and teaching, Jesus pointed us to a relationship with God.
Scriptures: Luke 6:17-23,27-31
Study The Bible: Luke 6:17-19
1). Jesus brings healing to our lives.
- After coming down with them, he stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples and a great number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.
- They came to hear him and be healed of their diseases; and those tormented by unclean spirits were made well.
- The whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.
Lasting truths from: Luke 6:17-19
* Jesus is available to all who will come to Him.
* Jesus’s ministry is motivated by love and compassion for those in need.
* Jesus has a word of hope to share with those who seek Him.
* Jesus is Master and has power over evil in all of its expressions.
2). Jesus taught us the path to joy and favor with God.
Luke 6:20-23
- Then looking up at his disciples, he said; Blessed are you who are poor, because the kingdom of God is yours.
- Blessed are you who are hungry now, because you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, because you will laugh.
- Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man.
- “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy. Take note — your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets.
Lasting truths from: Luke 6:20-23
* Jesus ministers to His followers by offering a message of encouragement and blessing.
* God brings unparalleled and unequaled blessing to those who faithfully follow Jesus.
* Living for Jesus in not always popular and can lead to rejection and even persecution by those who oppose the things of God.
* The Lord will honor the faithful with His blessing, sometimes on earth, but certainly in heaven.
3). Jesus taught us to love as He loves.
Luke 6:27-31
- “But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you,
- bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
- If anyone hits you on the cheek, offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either.
- Give to everyone who asks you, and from someone who takes your things, don’t ask for them back.
- Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.
Lasting truths from: Luke 6:27-31
* Love comes from being in right relationship with God wherein He is our Father and we are His children.
* The lofty expectations Jesus has for His disciples come from understanding and applying the intent of God’s instructions — godly love — not merely following the letter of the law.
* As disciples of Jesus, we are to treat others as we would like to be treated.
* Following Jesus affects every area of our lives and every relationship we have with others, from those who are closest to us and even to those we would regard as our enemies.
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- What changes can you point to in your life because of the life-changing ministry of Jesus to you?
- Identify some areas of your attitude and actions in which you need to grow to be more like Jesus?
- In what practical ways this week can you implement Jesus’s teaching about love and the truth of Luke 6:31?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
