Sunday School Lesson June 6, 2021
Subject: Characterized by Love
The Point: Ground everything you do in a love for Christ.
The Passages: Revelation 2:1-7
Study The Bible: Revelation 2:1-3
1). Be known for your good works.
- “Write to the angel of the church in Ephesus; Thus says the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand and who walks among the seven golden lampstands;
- I know your works, your labor, and your endurance, and that you cannot tolerate evil people. You have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and you have found them to be liars.
- I know that you have persevered and endured hardships for the sake of my name, and you have not grown weary.
Lasting truths from: Revelation 2:1-3
* God is sovereignly moving among His churches and evaluates them accurately.
* Christians have a responsibility to work diligently through Christ’s church.
* Maintaining doctrinal integrity is a crucial work of the church which Christ commands.
2). Let your love for Christ fuel your good works.
Revelation 2:4-6
- But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.
- Remember then how far you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. Otherwise, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.
- Yet you do have this: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.
Lasting truth from: Revelation 2:4-6
* Acts of service for Christ should come from a heart of love for Him.
* Constant evaluation of our relationship with Christ is wise.
* Standing for orthodox faith is not enough; it must come from a heart of love for Christ.
3). Keep this in mind; believers will one day dwell with Christ.
Revelation 2:7
- Let anyone who has ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise for God.”
Lasting truth from: Revelation 2:7
* When we read Scripture, we must bear the Spirit of God speaking to us.
* We can overcome sin through the blood of Jesus Christ.
* Those who overcome will spend eternity in the presence of Christ.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this lesson respond to the following questions:
- How committed are you to exposing doctrinal error and standing for Christ, even if it costs you?
- How does your love for Christ motivate you to serve Him and others?
- What influence does your church have in loving its community? How can you help that love to grow and be more evident?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
