Sunday School Lesson June 14, 2020

Subject: The Expression of Our Hope

The Point: Our hope in Christ changes how we view the world and live in it.

The Passage: 1 Peter 1:13-25

Study The Bible: 1 Peter 1:13-16

1). Live in grace and holiness rather than conformity to the world.

  1. Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
  2. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance.
  3. But as the one who called you is holy in all your conduct;
  4. for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.

Lasting truths from 1 Peter 1:13-16

  • Our mindset as Christians should be focused on the hope that we have in Jesus Christ.
  • Holiness is made possible for us because of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Since God is holy and we are His children, we are called to be holy.
  • Holy living is vital to our witness as followers of Jesus.

2). Live as God’s people because we have been redeemed from the world.

1 Peter 1:17-21

  1. If you appeal to the Father who judges impartially according to each one’s work, you are to conduct yourselves in reverence during your time living as strangers.
  2. For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,
  3. but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb.
  4. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was revealed in these last times for you.
  5. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Lasting truths from 1 Peter 1:17-21

  • Knowledge of a certain future judgment is plenty of motivation for us to live a holy life on earth right now.
  • We have been redeemed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
  • Because Jesus has paid the price for our redemption, we can place our hope and trust in Him.

3). Live according to God’s Word in order to remain pure in this world.

1 Peter 1:22-25

  1. Since you have purified yourselves by your obedience to the truth, so that you show sincere brotherly love for each other, from a pure heart love one another constantly,
  2. because you have been born again – not of perishable seed but of imperishable – through the living and enduring word of God.
  3. For all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like a flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls,
  4. but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this word is the gospel that was proclaimed to you.

Lasting truths from 1 Peter 1:22-25

  • God’s Word has a sanctifying effect on those who put it into practice.
  • The presence of God’s love in our hearts is confirmation of our experience of the new birth in Christ.
  • The seed of God’s Word produces life and fruit in our lives for all to see.
  • Unlike man’s words, God’s Word has dynamic power to change our lives.
