Sunday School Lesson December 12, 2021

Subject: Light in the darkness,

The Point: Jesus shines His light into a dark world.

The Passages: Isaiah 9:1-3, John 1:1-9

Study The Bible: Isaiah 9:1-3

1). The Light shines on those living in a land of darkness.

1. Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali. But in the future he will bring honor to the way of the sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations.
2. The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned o those living in the land of darkness.
3. You have enlarged the nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before you as they rejoice at harvest time and as they rejoice when dividing spoils.

Lasting truths from: Isaiah 9:1-3

* Those who live in rebellion against God live in darkness.

* God promised that He would send a light to those living in the darkness.

* The light began to shine in Galilee through the ministry of Jesus Christ.

2). Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness.

John 1:1-4

1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2. He was with God in the beginning.
3. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.
4. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.

Lasting truth from: John 1:1-4

* Jesus is fully God.

*  Jesus was present and active with God in creation.

*  Jesus brings life and light to those who fell from God’s original creation.

3). Jesus gives light to everyone.

John 1:5-9

5. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.
6. There was a man sent from God whose name was John.
7. He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe through him.
8. He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.
9. The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

Lasting truth from: John 1:5-9

* The darkness will not have victory over the Light.

*  All who believe in Jesus will live in the light.

* Like John, we must share the Gospel of Light with those who are living in darkness.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

1. What are evidence that many people are still walking in darkness even though Jesus has already come?
2. Why would it be improper to view the world only as a dualistic struggle between light and darkness?
3. What does it mean for a person to believe in Christ?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
