Subject: Shaking Off Fear

The Point: God is our defender no matter what we face.

The Passage: Psalm 91:1-6, 9-16

Study The Bible: Psalm 91:1-6

1). When fear strikes, trust God’s power.

1. The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.
2. I will say concerning the Lord, who is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust:
3. He himself will rescue you from the bird trap, from the destructive plague.
4. He will cover you with his feathers; you will take refuge under his wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.
5. You will not fear the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day,
6. the plague that stalks in darkness, or the pestilence that ravages at noon.

Lasting truths from Psalm 91:1-6

• If we will live under the protection on the Lord we can dwell in His shadow, a place of safety.
• The God in whom we trust is a refuge and fortress when we are afraid.
• God’s faithfulness is a protective shield, and we have no need to fear.
• Because of who God is, we need not fear anything if we are His children.

2). When fear strikes, trust God’s protection.

Psalm 91:9-13

9. Because you have made the Lord—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place,
10. no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent.
11. For he will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways.
12. They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the young lion and the serpent.

Lasting truths from Psalm 91:9-13

• If we abide and dwell in the Lord, we need not fear.
• While we can be assured of God’s protection, this passage is not a universal promise that harm will never come to those who trust I God. Even when we trust God, believers can—and do—encounter pain and suffering, even death.
• One duty of angels is to help and protect us.

3).  When fear strikes, walk with God.

Psalm 91:14-16

14. Because he has his heart set on me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows my name.
15. When he calls out to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will rescue him and give him honor.
16. I will satisfy him with a long life and show him my salvation.

Lasting truths from Psalm 91:14-16

• God has described the blessing that He gives to those who know and love Him.
• If we love the Lord, He has promised to answer when we cry out to Him and will be with us during trouble.
• If our heart is set on God, He will grant us long life and show us His salvation.

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions.

1. How do you typically respond to fear? What are you most afraid of?
2. When fear strikes, how do you trust in God’s power and protection?
3. What practical steps can you take to walk with God when fear strikes?
4. How do you distinguish between worry and fear? Take a few minutes and make a mental list of the ways God has walked with you through the difficult seasons you’ve faced.

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, In Jesus’ name, Amen”
