Sunday School Lesson September 5, 2021

Subject:  Sure of Forgiveness

The Passages: We are forgiven when we confess our sin and walk with Christ.

Study The Bible: 1 John 1:5-7

1).  We are forgiven because Jesus paid the price for us.

  1. This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you; God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him.
  2. If we say, “We have fellowship with him,” and yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth.
  3. If we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Lasting truths from: 1 John 1:5-7

* God is holy, righteous, and perfect.

*  The indictment of sin in the human race is very clear.

* Whether or not we enjoy the opportunity to have fellowship with God depends on our response to the message.

* Forgiveness of sin is only possible through Jesus’ blood.

2). We are forgiven because Jesus is faithful and righteous.

1 John 1:8-10

  1. If we say, “We have no sin, “ we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
  2. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  3. If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Lasting truth from: 1 John 1:8-10

*  Once we receive Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf by faith, then He is faithful and righteous to forgive us on the grounds of His shed blood on the cross.

*  When we confess our sins to God, we are agreeing with Him that we have done wrong.

*  The blessing and reason for confession is because God promises forgiveness.

*  God will be faithful to keep His promise because He is righteous and in Him is no darkness.

3). We are forgiven because Jesus stands as our advocate.

1 John 2:1-2

  1. My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one.
  2. He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.

Lasting truth from: 1 John 2:1-2

* Our Savior lives and He is now our Advocate with the Heavenly Father.

*  As our Advocate, Jesus  reminds the Father that He shed His blood for all our sin.

*. Once we understand the heavenly aspect of Christ’s ministry as our Advocate, we will be better equipped to live a victorious Christian life.

*  Jesus is the Savior of the world because He died for the sin of the whole world.

Live It Out

We experience forgiveness through Jesus Christ when we confess our sin and place our trust in Him. He is the One who makes forgiveness possible because of His sacrificial death on the cross. His blood covers our sin and we enjoy fellowship with the Lord. Now, we can go to Him whenever we are in need of forgiveness.

  1. How can we be certain that we have been forgiven by the Lord?
  2. What does it mean to confess our sin to God?
  3. How do we experience forgiveness and cleansing form God when we sin as a follower of Jesus Christ?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
