Subject: Honor God

The Point: Our relationship with God is seen in how we honor Him.

The Passage: Exodus 20:7-11, Psalm 145:1-7

Study The Bible: Exodus 20:7-11

1). We Are to Honor God’s Name and Everything about Him.

7. Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God, because the Lord will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses his name.
8. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy;
9. You are to labor six days and do all your work,
10. but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates.
11. For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.

Lasting truths from Exodus 20:7-11

• We honor God by avoiding perjury and profanity.
• We honor God when our conduct matches our claim to be Christian.
• We honor God by setting aside a day to focus on Him.

2). We Are to Honor God Through Our Worship.

Psalm 145:1-3

1. I exalt you, my God the King, and bless your name forever and ever.
2. I will bless you every day; I will praise your name forever and ever.
3. The Lord is great and is highly praised; his greatness is unsearchable.

Lasting truths from Psalm 145:1-3

• We honor God through personal, as well as congregational, worship.
• We honor God through daily worship.
• We honor God by focusing on His greatness that is beyond human comprehension.

3). We Are to Honor God Through Our Testimony and Actions.

Psalm 145:4-7

4. One generation will declare your works to the next and will proclaim your mighty acts.
5. I will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty and your wondrous works.
6. They will proclaim the power of your awe-inspiring acts, and I will declare your greatness.
7. They will give a testimony of your great goodness and will joyfully sing of your righteousness.

Lasting truths from Psalm 145:4-7

• God’s acts proclaim His greatness.
• Each generation of God’s people is responsible to pass their faith to the next generation.
• Testimony to God’s greatness must be personal as well as congregational.
• We honor God when both our words and actions reflect His goodness and righteousness.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions.

1. If you claim to be a Christian, how do your actions consistently support that claim?
2. How has this study of the third commandment made you aware of ways you have failed to honor God’s name?
3. Evaluate the sincerity of your worship. Does it include daily praise (Ps. 145:2)?
4. What kind of testimony are your words and actions conveying to others? Would they conclude from your lifestyle that you honor God? List specific elements of your lifestyle that could lead others to conclude you honor God?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, In Jesus’ name, Amen”
