Sunday School Lesson October 16, 2022
Subject: Why We Need God’s Word
The Point: The Bible reveals everything we need to live victoriously.
The Passages: 2 Timothy 3:1-5,13-17
Study The Bible: 2 Timothy 3:1-5
1). Sin abounds in our culture.
- But know this: Hard times will come in the last days.
- For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
- unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good,
- traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
- holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people.
Lasting truths from: 2 Timothy 3:1-5
* Sin’s corruption will continue to spread in society until Jesus returns.
* Inordinate self-love leads to a myriad of negative traits manifested in unbelievers.
* Christians should hold to the authority of Christ and not merely a form of religion.
2). Avoiding sin requires the wisdom of God’s Word.
2 Timothy 3:13-15
- Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived.
- But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who have taught you,
- and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
Lasting truths from: 2 Timothy 3:13-15
* We should weigh the teachings of everyone by Scripture.
* We should always be thankful for those who have taught us the gospel.
* We should abide in the gospel, growing in our understanding and practice of it.
3). God’s Word comes straight from God to mature and equip us.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
- All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
- so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Lasting truth from: 2 Timothy 3:16-17
* We can have great confidence that all Scripture is the living Word of God.
* The Bible shows us what to believe and how to live.
* The Bible corrects us when we embrace false doctrine or walk in ways contrary to it.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- Why should you trust in the authority of the Bible as you form your belief system and make decisions about the way that you live? How is this different that the encyclopedia or GPS mentioned in the introduction of the session?
- What are some of the false teachings that threaten to lead the church away from the gospel today?
- Why is it important to allow the Scripture to both train and correct you? What happens if one of these is disallowed in a person’s life?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
