Subject: Honor All Relationships

The Point: Integrity and contentment in Christ form the foundation for good relationships.

The Passage: Exodus 20:15-17, Psalm 37:1-6

Study The Bible: Exodus 20:15-16

1). Be a Person of Integrity in both Your Actions and Speech.

15. Do not steal.
16. Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.

Lasting truths from Exodus 20:15-16

• God requires integrity in our actions and our speech.
• God commands us to respect others’ possessions.
• Ownership of private property carries with it the responsibility of stewardship.

2). Find Contentment In What God Provides.

Exodus 20:17

17. Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Lasting truths from Exodus 20:17

• God requires us to reject ungoverned, selfish desires because such covetousness reveals lack of contentment with His provisions for us.
• God’s mandate against covetousness encompasses both people and things.
• God’s directive against covetousness applies to our dealings with all people, not just those living in close proximity to us.
• God expects us to cultivate right relationships by right attitudes as well as by right actions.

3).  All We Desire Rests In God.

Psalm 37:1-6

1. Do not be agitated by evildoers, do not envy those who do wrong.
2. For they wither quickly like grass and wilt like tender green plants.
3. Trust in the Lord and do what is good, dwell in the land and live securely.
4. Take delight in the Lord, and his will give you your heart’s desires.
5. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act,
6. making your righteousness shine like the dawn, your justice like the noonday.

Lasting truths from Psalm 37:1-6

• When we are in right relationship with the Lord, we do not deeply desire the short lived prosperity and power of wrongdoers.
• We demonstrate wisdom by relying on God rather than depending on anybody or anything else for security.
• We reveal our trust in the Lord by doing what is right in a culture where evil dominates.
• When we live in fellowship with the Lord by committing our lives to Him, our desires will be in line with His will and purposes.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions.

1. On a scale of 1 (weakest) to 10 (strongest) how honorably are you living in relationship with others?
2. On which principle from Exodus 20:15-17 do you need to place more focus—demonstrating integrity or finding contentment—in order to lay a stronger foundation for honorable relationships and a stable life? Explain.
3. Which commandment do you find more difficult to keep—not stealing or not coveting? Why?
4. Recall a specific occasion when you committed your way to the Lord and trusted in Him. How did He respond?

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, In Jesus’ name, Amen”
