Subject: God Deserves Our Thanks

The Point: We have so much to thank God for.

Scriptures: Psalm 65:1-13

Study The Bible: 65:1-4

1). Thankful for God’s forgiveness.

1. Praise is rightfully yours, God, in Zion; vows to you will be fulfilled.
2. All humanity will come to you, the one who hears prayer.
3. Iniquities overwhelm me; only you can atone for our rebellions.
4. How happy is the one you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We will be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple.

Lasting truths from: Psalm: 65:1-4

* God is due our praise and thanksgiving.

* We can count on God to hear our earnest prayers.

* Left alone, our sins will overwhelm us.

* God in His sovereign grace forgives our sins and invites us into communion with Him.  

* We are never more blessed and satisfied than in knowing our sins have been forgiven; thus, we are set free to serve the Lord.

2). Thankful for God’s greatness and power.

Psalm 65:5-8

5. You answer us in righteousness, with awe-inspiring works, God of our salvation, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the distant seas.
6. You establish the mountains by your power; you are robed with strength.
7. You silence the roar of the seas, the roar of their waves, and the tumult of the nations.
8. Those who live far away are awed by your signs; you make east and west shout for joy.

Lasting truths from: Psalm 65:5-8

*  The God of our salvation responds to us with awesome power.

* The only hope for this world—all peoples and nations is found in the saving grace of God.

* The same God who manifest His power in creation continues to manifest it as He works in guiding the course of this world toward the accomplishment of His holy purpose and the coming of His kingdom.

3). Thankful for God’s provision.

Psalm 65:9-13

9. You visit the earth and water it abundantly, enriching it greatly. God’s stream is filled with water, for you prepare the earth in this way, providing people with grain.
10. You soften it with showers and bless its growth, soaking its furrows and leveling its ridges.
11. You crown the year with your goodness; your carts overflow with plenty.
12. The wilderness pastures overflow, and the hills are robed with joy.
13. The pastures are clothed with flocks and the valleys covered with grain. They shout in triumph; indeed, they sing.

Lasting truths from: 65:9-13

* God is faithful to provide all that we need.

* We are to rejoice in His goodness to us.

* Praise and thank God for His goodness.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

1. Reassess your Thanksgiving Day. You have so much to thank God for, don’t you?
2. Thank God for the forgiveness of sin and salvation that enables us to dwell in His presence.
3. Thank God for a specific way He worked powerfully to bring relief in a stormy time of your life.
4. Thank God for all the ways He has provided for you, your family, your church, the community, and the nation.
5. What song can you sing to express praise and thanksgiving to the God who is worthy?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
