Subject: Trust God to Work

The Point: Share Christ in all situations but leave the results to God.

The Passages: Matthew 13:3-8,18-23

Study The Bible: Matthew 13:3-8

1). Share the message of Christ wherever you are.

3. Then he told them many things in parables, saying; “Consider the sower who went out to sow.
4. As he sowed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them.
5. Other seed fell on rocky ground where it didn’t have much soil, and it grew up quickly since the soil wasn’t deep.
6. But when the sun came up, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away.
7. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and chocked it.
8. Still other seed fell on good ground and produced fruit: some a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times what was sown.

Lasting truths from: Matthew 13:3-8

* Christ’s followers must share His message.

*  The response to the message depends upon those who hear it, not on Christ’s followers who share it.

*  Different people will respond to the gospel message in different ways.

2). Not everyone is transformed by the gospel.

Matthew 13:18-22

18. “So listen to the parable of the sower;
19. When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the one sown along the path.
20. And the one sown on rocky ground—this is one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy.
21. But he has no root and is short-lived. When distress or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he falls away.
22. Now the one sown among the thorns—this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Lasting truth from: Matthew 13:18-22

*  Some people hear the  gospel message and refuse to respond by accepting it.

*  Some people respond to the gospel with joy but allow distress or persecution to rob them of salvation.

*  Some people respond to the gospel message but then allow the worries of this age or the deceitfulness of wealth to keep them from bearing the fruit of salvation.

3). Those who accept the message and follow Christ experience abundance.

Matthew 13:23

23. But the one sown on the good ground—this is one who hears and understands the word, who does produce fruit and yields; some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times what was sown.”

Lasting truth from: Matthew 13:23

*  Only those who hear and understand (obey) the gospel message experience genuine salvation.

*  When we become Christians, we will produce fruit.

* Not all Christians produce the same amount of fruit.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this lesson respond to the following questions:

1. What actions can you take this week to help those who have heard God’s Word understand it?
2. What can you do to help others in whom the cares of this world choke out the Word of God?
3. What activities in your life are helping people to hear and understand Christ’s gospel message?
4. What type of fruit are you producing for God? Are you sowing, watering, weeding, or reaping?
5. What will you do this week that will increase the fruit you are producing for God?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
