Subject: Yield

The Point: Humbly place the needs of others before your own. 

The Passages: Philippians 2:1-5, 13-15

Study The Bible: Philippians 2:1-4

1). Humbly Look Out For the Needs and Interests of Others.

  1. If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,
  2. make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.
  3. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
  4. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Lasting truths from Philippians 2:1-4

  • As believers, the encouragement and love we show for others can only come from Christ.
  • As believers, we are to be united in purpose, working together to achieve Christ’s purposes.
  • We are always to consider others as more important than ourselves.

2). Jesus Is Our Example of Humility and Submission.

  1. Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus,

Lasting truths from Philippians 2:5

  • Jesus is our only true example of humility and submission.
  • Through His Spirit, we have the mind of Christ.
  • When we have the mind of Christ, we put the needs of others above our own.

 

3). Submit Without Grumbling, Complaining, or Arguing.

Philippians 2:13-15

  1. For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose.
  2. Do everything without grumbling and arguing,
  3. so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world.

Lasting truths from Philippians 2:13-15

  • God is continually working in us.
  • God’s work in us instills in us the desire to serve Him.
  • We are to serve God in love without complaining or being defensive.
  • Because God has saved us, we are as lights in a dark world.
