Subject: Keep Serving Faithfully
The Point: Serve Christ faithfully as you wait for His return.
The Passages: Matthew 24:42-51
Study The Bible: Matthew 24:42-44
1). Stay alert and ready for the return of Christ.
- Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming.
- But know this: If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into.
- This is why you are to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Lasting truths from: Matthew 24:42-44
* Believers should remain alert for the second coming of Jesus Christ.
* Remaining vigilant in our faith is an important aspect of watching for Jesus return.
* Jesus is coming at an hour people do not expect.
2). Remain faithful to what God has called you to do.
Matthew 24:45-47
- “Who then I a faithful and wise servant, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give them food at the proper time?
- Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing his job when he comes.
- Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
Lasting truths from: Matthew 24:45-47
* God is looking for faithful servants who will carry out their callings for Him.
* God’s desire is for His followers to serve Him faithfully when Jesus returns.
* Serving the Lord faithfully in little things can lead to His giving us charge over bigger things.
3). Don’t live for yourself while you wait for Jesus’ return.
Matthew 24:48-51
- But if that wicked servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delayed,’
- and starts to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drink with drunkards,
- that servant’s master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know.
- He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrities, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Lasting truth from: Matthew 24:48-51
* Inaccurate thinking can lead to wicked actions.
* Consuming ourselves with our own interests will distract us from focusing on God’s interests.
* God delights in His children’s obedience.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- How does reading our Bible regularly and meeting with other believers for worship and Bible study encourage us to be alert for Jesus’ return?
- Read Matthew 24:45-51 slowly and reflectively, noting the contrast between the faithful and wicked servants. Are you serving God faithfully? In what areas of life might you be yielding to unbiblical thinking? Consider what you can do to change that.
- Make a list of ways you can demonstrate living for God while you await Jesus’ return. Consider how some of these ways might impact people you know who do not know Jesus.
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
