Sunday School Lesson May 16, 2021

Subject: Live The Message

The Point: How we live reflects on the message we share.

The Passages: Colossians 3:1-3, 12-17

Study The Bible: Colossians 3:1-3

1). Seek the things of Christ, not the things of the world.

  1. So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
  2. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
  3. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Lasting truths from: Colossians 3:1-3

* As Christians, we are to focus our lives on heavenly things instead of earthly things.

*  As Christians, we are to put aside all evil thoughts and actions.

*  Jesus Christ is seated in the position of power at God the Father’s right hand in heaven.

*  As Christians, we are hidden with Christ in God, and this provides us with ultimate security.

2). Put on and wear the character of Christ.

Colossians 3:12-15

  1. Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
  2. bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive.
  3. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
  4. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful.

Lasting truth from: Colossians 3:12-15

*  Christians are chosen, loved and holy.

*  Christians are commanded to practice the virtues of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

*  The greatest virtue Christians are commanded to practice is love.

*  When Christians practice love, the bond of unity is always present.

*  Christians must practice the peace of Christ, it must rule our hearts so that we become  thankful.

3). Let everything in your life point to Christ with gratitude and thanks.

Colossians 3:16-17

  1. Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
  2. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Lasting truth from: Colossians 3:16-17

*  Christ’s message must live in our hearts.

*  We must express how Christ’s message lives in our hearts through actions such as teaching, admonishing, and singing.

* We reflect thanks to God by ensuring everything we say and do reflects the character of Christ.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this lesson respond to the following questions:

  1. Which of your activities this week indicate that you have set your mind on things above?
  2. What will you change so that you can set your mind on things above?
  3. How should your life be rated in terms of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience?
  4. Since God has treated you with love, if you fail to treat others with love, what does this indicate about your relationship with God?
  5. What do you need to change so that your actions and words show that you serve Jesus as Lord of your life?
  6. How can you make sure that all your words, and actions reflect gratitude and thanksgiving to God for who He is and what He’s done for you?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
