Sunday School Lesson May 15, 2022

Subject: Trust God’s Timing

The Point: Jesus is certain to return even though we don’t know exactly when.

The Passages: Matthew 24:32-41

Study The Bible: Matthew 24:32-33

1). We don’t know when Christ will return, but we can see the signs.

  1. “Learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.
  2. In the same way, when you see all these things, recognize that he is near—at the door.

Lasting truths from: Matthew 24:32-33

* Jesus provided signs that will help believers know His return is approaching.

* Jesus’ parables use earthly situations to powerfully explain spiritual realities.

* Every day is one day closer to the return of Jesus Christ.

2). Trust God’s Word about Christ’s return, because His Word is eternal and unchanging.

Matthew 24:34-35

  1. Truly I tell you this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.
  2. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Lasting truths from: Matthew 24:34-35

* All people eventually will see the truth of Jesus’ words.

*  One day the universe as we know it will cease to exist.

*  God’s word is eternal and unchanging and it will never pass away.

3). Don’t speculate about the timing of Jesus’ return.

Matthew 24:36-41

  1. “Now concerning that day and hour no one knows—neither the angels of heaven nor the Son—except the Father alone.
  2. As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be.
  3. For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark.
  4. They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be.
  5. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.
  6. Two women will be grinding grain with a hand mill; one will be taken and one left.

Lasting truth from: Matthew 24:36-41

* No one knows the day or hour of Christ’s return.

*  Many people will be totally surprised and caught unaware by Jesus’ return.

* The fact that so many remain unaware of Jesus and His return should motivate us to evangelism and missions.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

  1. Read reflectively Matthew 24:36, In light of Jesus’ clear statement, why do you think so many people today attempt to figure out the exact time of His return?
  2. How do Jesus’ words in today’s session passage discourage us from trying to set a date for His return, yet encourage us to remain alert for signs of it?
  3. What steps can your church take to become more involved in local evangelism and world mission? What can you do personally in your circle of influence?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
