Subject: The Resurrection of Jesus

The Point: Jesus rose again to give us victory over death.

Scriptures: Luke 24:1-8,38-43

Study The Bible: Luke 24:1-6a

1). Look to the empty tomb. On the first day of the week.

1. On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
2. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3. They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.
5. So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.

6a. “He is not here, but he has risen!

Lasting truths from: Luke 24:1-6a

* The death of Jesus was real, but it is not the end of the gospel story.

* Jesus is not found among the “dead” things of the ancient past but is alive and ever present, even today.

* Jesus has risen from the dead!

2). Remember what Jesus said.

Luke 24:6b-8

6b. Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,

7. saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’?”
8. And they remembered his words.

Lasting truths from: Luke 24:6b-8

*  The Lord’s Word is given to us to teach and prepare us for what lies ahead.

* The Lord’s Word is true, and He is faithful to it.

* Recalling the words of Jesus can bring peace and hope to us during troubled times.

* Even in what appears to be the worst of circumstances, God is still in control, and He will accomplish His redemptive plan and fulfill His holy purpose.

3). Jesus makes Himself known.

Luke 24:38-43

38. “Why are you troubled?” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39. Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”
40. Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
41. But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
42. So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish,
43. and he took it and ate in their presence.

Lasting truths from:  Luke 24:38-43

*  Jesus comes to reveal Himself to us and to bring peace to our troubled lives.

* Even though we may have struggles of faith, the Lord continually offers Himself to us and challenges us to test that He is who He say He is and capable of doing what He says He will do.

* The resurrection of Jesus is not a fable, neither is it a shadowy, spiritual phenomenon.

* Our experiences with the living Lord prepare us to share the truth of Christ with  others.

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

1. What examples of direct and circumstantial evidence do you see in the Scripture passages for this session? How do they support the fact of Jesus’s resurrection?
2. How is the resurrection a fact on which you are building your life?
3. In what way do you give evidence that Jesus is the Living Lord?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
