Subject: A Life of Trust
The Point: We can trust Jesus because He is the way, the truth, and the life.
The Passages: 13:36-14:6
Study The Bible: John 13:36-14:1
1). We are to trust God rather than our own abilities.
- “Lord,” Simon Peter said to him, “where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”
- “Lord,” Peter asked, “why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”
- Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly I tell you, a foster will not crow until you have denied me three times.
14:1. “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
Lasting truths from: John 13:36-14:1
* We set ourselves up for failure when we trust in our abilities rather than trusting in God.
* Even when we follow Jesus, we may still fail to understand Jesus’ words.
* Although we may have good intentions, we don’t always follow through on our promises.
* Belief in God requires belief in Jesus.
2). Jesus made it possible for us to be with God, the Father.
John 14:2-3
- In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
- If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.
Lasting truth from: John 14:2-3
* Jesus and only Jesus makes it possible for us to be with God the Father.
* Jesus promised to prepare a place for His disciples (of all ages) in Heaven with the Father.
* Jesus promised that His disciples would be with Him.
3). Trusting Jesus is the only way to God the Father.
John 14:4-6
- “Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?”
- Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Lasting truth from: John 14:4-6
* Jesus is the way; only He shows us how we get to God the Father—there is no other way.
* Jesus is the truth; only in Him do we find eternal truth—the truth that sets us free.
* Jesus is the life; only in Jesus do we see life as it was meant to be—life in all its fullness.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- Why do you sometimes trust in your abilities rather than in God’s abilities?
- What steps can you take this week to trust less in your own abilities and trust more in God’s abilities?
- Why do you think that Jesus made the promise of Heaven to His disciples of that day? Do you think they apply to us as well? Why or why not?
- What have you learned about heaven from Jesus’ words in these verses?
- What steps do you need to take this week to help you bring your questions to Jesus?
- How will the fact that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life” make a difference in the way you live today? This month? This year?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
