Sunday School Lesson July 4, 2021
Subject: Vigilant Against Complacency
The Point: Stay alert and focused on the things of God.
The Passages: Revelation 3:1-6
Study The Bible: Revelation 3:1-2
1). Guard against complacency.
- “Write to the angel of the church in Sardis: Thus says the one who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars: I know your works; you have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead.
- Be alert and strengthen what remains, which is about to die, for I have not found your works complete before my God.
Lasting truths from: Revelation 3:1-2
* Jesus has life-giving power to offer His church.
* Our outward reputation must be matched by our inward character.
* We need to guard against complacency in our churches.
2). Maintain vigilance and stay alert.
Revelation 3:3
- Remember, then, what you have received and heard; keep it, and repent. If you are not alert, I will come life a thief, and you have no idea at what hour I will come upon you.
Lasting truth from: Revelation 3:3
* Continued meditation on the gospel and teachings of Christ keep us from spiritual slumber.
* Thinking about the gospel and Word of God are important, but keeping them is also a necessity.
* Those who will not repent face the judgment of God.
3). Reflect the worth Christ has given you.
Revelation 3:4-6
- But you have a few people in Sardis who have not defiled their clothes, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.
- In the same way, the one who conquers will be dressed in white clothes, and I will never erase his name from the book of life but will acknowledge his name before my father and before his angels.
- Let anyone who has ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Lasting truth from: Revelation 3:4-6
* Those who have been saved walk in purity now, and will also in the future.
* God has the ability to keep all those who belong to Him.
* Jesus will testify in behalf of those who have trusted Him.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this lesson respond to the following questions:
- How can we spot complacency in our walk with Christ?
- How does meditating upon and obeying the gospel shake us from complacency?
- How does your worth in Christ motivate you to remain faithful?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
