Sunday School Lesson January 28, 2024
Subject: Yielded Faith
The Point: Faith acknowledges the authority of Jesus.
Scriptures: Luke 7:1-10
Study The Bible: Luke 7:1-5
1). Look to Jesus
- When he concluded saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum.
- A centurion’s servant, who was highly valued by him, was sick and about to die.
- When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, requesting him to come and save the life of his servant.
- When they reached Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for you to grant this,
- because he loves our nation and has built us a synagogue?
Lasting truths from: Luke 7:1-5
* Jesus teaches the crowds but always is available to each person.
* Hearing about Jesus is the first step toward faith in Him.
* The Lord acts impartially; He does not separate people by ethnicity, social status, educational level, position, of other such categories.
* When in despair, turn to Jesus.
2). Acknowledge His authority.
Luke 7:6-8
- Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.
- That is why I didn’t even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed.
- For I too am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, “Go,’ and he goes, and to another, “Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
Lasting truths from: Luke 7:6-8
* Jesus responds to our needs in every situation.
* We have no right to make demands of Jesus.
* We are to approach the Lord with humility, believing He is able to do what needs to be done.
* Ultimate authority resides in Jesus, bestowed on Him by the Father, to be used for His glory.
3). Please Jesus.
Luke 7:9-10
- Jesus heard this and was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found so great a faith even in Israel.”
- When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant in good health.
Lasting truths from: Luke 7:9-10
* Our faith brings great pleasure to the Lord.
* Faith is the victory.
* The Lord is not limited in how He does His mighty work.
- Recall a time when you turned and looked to Jesus for help in a stormy time of life. How did He respond?
- Think of some ways you have experienced the wonder-working power of Christ in your life.
- Do you think you have the kind of faith that brings pleasure to the Lord? Ask Him to help you strengthen your faith.
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
