Subject: Does It Agree with the Bible?

The Point: The voice of God never contradicts the Bible.

Scriptures: Genesis 3:1-6

Study The Bible: Genesis 3:1

1). Don’t question God’s Word.

1. Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, “You can’t eat from any tree in the garden?”

Lasting truths from: Genesis 3:1                                    

*  Sometimes a person’s question may be a play to create confusion and cause us to question what God has said.

* Others can shrewdly twist God’s words, seeking to lead us away from God.

* We must be alert and cautious lest we become victims of Satan’s destructive schemes.

2). Don’t alter God’s Word.

Genesis 3:2-3

2. The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruits from the trees in the garden.
3. But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, “You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.”

Lasting truths from: Genesis 3:2-3  

* Acknowledging the authority of God’s Word is essential for us to live securely on the foundation of truth that it provides.

* We must know God’s Word if we want to avoid altering it.

* God’s words are given for our direction, and His prohibitions are given for our protection.

3). Don’t contradict God’s Word.

Genesis 3:4-6

4. “No! You will certainly not die,” the serpent said to the woman.
5. “In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6. The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

Lasting truth from: Genesis 3:4-6

* We can avoid contradicting God’s Word by knowing and obeying it.

*  Since true wisdom comes from God, we cannot receive wisdom by being disobedient to God’s Word.

* We always have a choice when faced with temptation, and trusting God will enable us to avoid giving in to temptation.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

1. How does knowing what God has said help you to discern, His will for your life?
2. Are there any areas in your life where like Eve you are living as if you know better what is best for you than God does? Ask God to reveal to you any such areas that need to be addressed.
3. Many people make decisions based on their feelings. What problems can occur when we try to discern God’s will through our emotions?
4. Some people have said, “God told me to…” as they planned to do something contrary to Scripture. How could you help someone understand that God’s will doesn’t contradict His Word?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
