Sunday School Lesson February 19, 2023

Subject: Does It Honor God?

The Point: God’s voice always leads us to glorify Him and accomplish His purposes.

Scriptures: John 17:1-9

Study The Bible: John 17:1-3

1). We honor God when we share about the eternal life Christ offers.

  1. Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you,
  2. since you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him.
  3. This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent — Jesus Christ.”

Lasting truths from: John 17:1-3

*  We should desire to glorify God in our lives.

* Knowing God is more than knowing facts about God.

* No one can know God unless they know Jesus, acknowledging Him as God incarnate.

2). We honor God when we continue the work He has given us.

John 17:4-5

  1. “I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
  2. Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.”

Lasting truths from: John 17:4-5

*  Jesus’s perfectly sinless life demonstrated God’s glory.

* Jesus’s glory in His death and resurrection was a restoration of His preincarnate glory.

3). We honor God when we pray and disciple others.

John 17:6-9

  1. “I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
  2. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you,
  3. because I have given them the words you gave me. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me.
  4. I pray from them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they are yours.”

Lasting truth from: John 17:6-9

* Throughout the Bible and throughout history, God has always had a people set apart for Himself.

*  God loves His people in a special and unique way that is different from the way that He loves the rest of creation.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

  1. As you rely on the power of the Holy Spirit in you, what is one thing that you can start doing today for the glory of Christ among all nations?
  2. Why is it important that you rely on the Holy Spirit as you seek to bring glory to Christ?
  3. Why do the Scriptures encourage us to love one another as Christ – followers?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
