Subject: Does It Align with God’s Character?
The Point: God never calls us to do something that is outside His character.
Scriptures: Exodus 34:1-9
Study The Bible: Exodus 34:1-5
1). God is holy and establishes a covenantal relationship with His children.
- The Lord said to Moses, “Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke.
- Be prepared by morning. Come up Mount Sinai in the morning and stand before me on the mountaintop.
- No one may go up with you; in fact, no one should be seen anywhere on the mountain. Even the flocks and herds and not to graze in front of that mountain.”
- Moses cut two stone tablets life the first ones. He got up early in the morning, and taking the two stone tablets in his hand, he climbed Mount Sinai, just as the Lord had commanded him.
- The Lord came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed his name, “the Lord.”
Lasting truths from: Exodus 34:1-5
* God’s instructions for how to live in obedience to Him are clear.
* True biblical obedience should be done with urgency.
* God keeps His promises — always.
2). God’s character is perfect and unchanging.
Exodus 34:6-7
- The Lord passed in front of him and proclaimed: “The Lord — the Lord is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth,
- maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But he will not leave the guilty unpunished, bringing the consequences of the fathers’ iniquity on the children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation.”
Lasting truths from: Exodus 34:6-7
* God is compassionate and gracious.
* God is slow to anger.
* God abounds in faithful love and truth.
* God is lavish in His forgiveness.
* God is both loving and just.
3). Our response to God’s holy character is to repent and worship Him.
Exodus 34:8-9
- Moses immediately knelt low on the ground and worshiped.
- Then he said, “My Lord, if I have indeed found favor with you, my Lord, please go with us (even though this is a stiff-necked people), forgive our iniquity and our sin, and accept us as your own possession.”
Lasting truth from: Exodus 34:8-9
* The only proper response to an encounter with God is worship.
* True biblical worship includes obedience.
* Jesus is the true and final Intercessor for us.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- What is best way for us to know and understand God’s will for our lives?
- Since the Bible is beautiful and never burdensome, how should we feel about having access to God’s Word?
- Since God’s Word is authoritative, what is one thing in your life that needs to be adjusted?
- How does knowing God is always faithful to keep His promises encourage you in your day-to-day walk with God?
- God has guaranteed that true believers will persevere in faith to the end of this life. What does it mean to you that you don’t have to live the Christian life “all on your own,” but instead the Holy Spirit is working with you and through you to accomplish His will (Phil. 2:12-13)?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
