Subject: The Righteousness of God’s Name
The Point: We can know righteousness when we know and walk with Jesus.
Scriptures: Jeremiah 23:5-6, Romans 3:10b-13, 21-26
Study The Bible: Jeremiah 23:5-6
1). God promised a king who is defined by righteousness.
- “Look, the days are coming” — this is the Lord’s declaration— “When I will raise up a Righteous Branch for David. He will reign wisely as king and administer justice and righteousness in the land.
- In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. This is the name he will be called: The Lord is Our Righteousness.
Lasting truths from: Jeremiah 23:5-6
* God promised a king who is defined by righteousness.
* The Messiah will serve as the perfect High Priest.
* The Messiah is morally perfect in His holiness.
2). There is no righteousness apart from God.
Romans 3:10b-13
10b. There is no one righteous, not even one.
- There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.
- All have turned away; all alike have become worthless. There is no one who does what is good, not even one.
- Their throat is an open grave; they deceive with their tongues. Vipers’ venom is under their lips.
Lasting truths from: Romans 3:10b-13
* God’s righteousness is so far above our own that we cannot fully comprehend it.
* All of our works are like filthy garments when held up to the righteousness of God is Christ.
* As followers of Christ, we should use our words to build up and encourage others, especially other believers.
3). God’s righteousness has been fully revealed in Jesus.
Romans 3:21-26
- But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, attested by the Law and the Prophets.
- The righteousness of God is through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, since there is no distinction.
- For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God;
- they are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
- God presented him as the mercy seat by his blood, through faith, to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his restraint God passed over the sins previously committed.
- God presented him to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so that he would be just and justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
Lasting truths from: Romans 3:21-26
* Human sinfulness is the biggest problem of all people everywhere for all time.
* God’s righteousness has been fully revealed in Jesus.
* Trusting in Christ is the only solution to the problem of sin.
Live It Out
- How does the Old Testament prepare the way for the gospel of Jesus Christ?
- Why is sin such a big problem?
- What does it mean to truly have faith in Christ?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
