Subject: Built on Christ

The Point: Everything in the church centers on Jesus Christ.

Scriptures: 1 Peter 2:1-12

Study The Bible: 1 Peter 2:1-5

1). The church is a people who trust and obey Christ.

  1. Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.
  2. Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow up into your salvation,
  3. if you have tasted that the Lord is good.
  4. As you come to him, a living stone — rejected by people but chosen and honored by God —
  5. you yourselves, as living stones, a spiritual house, are being built to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices accept able to God through Jesus Christ.

Lasting truths from: 1 Peter 2:1-5

* Those who have been born of the Spirit will lay aside those practices that are rooted in evil.

* Those who are born again will want to feed on the best spiritual nourishment found only in God’s Word.

* Some still reject Jesus and refuse to acknowledge Him as God’s Beloved.

* Believers are living stones built into a spiritual temple in which, as a holp priesthood, they offer spiritual sacrifices to God.

2). The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:6-8

  1. For it stands in Scripture: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and honored cornerstone, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.
  2. So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving, The stone that the builders rejected — this one has become the cornerstone,
  3. and A stone to stumble over, and a rock to trip over. They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this.

Lasting truths from: 1 Peter 2:6-8

*  Jesus is the cornerstone and foundation of the church. Those who believe in Jesus will not be ashamed of Him before others and will not be shamed by Him on the day of judgment.

* Those who reject Jesus and are disobedient to God’s Word of truth will fail at the judgment.

* Those who believe in Jesus see His worth as the One appointed by God as Savior.

* Jesus is a cause for stumbling to those who refuse to believe and obey Him.

3). The church proclaims Christ and glorifies God.

1 Peter 2:9-12

  1. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
  2. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
  3. Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and exiles to abstain from sinful desires that wage war against the soul.
  4. Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that when they slander you as evildoers, they will observe your good works and will glorify God on the day he visits.

Lasting truths from: 1 Peter 2:9-12

*  God calls His people to positions of great privilege, filled with great responsibility.

* Believers are not citizens of this world; only temporary residents waiting to go home to be with the Lord.

* Godly living is one way to proclaim the gospel and bring glory to God while we wait for Christ’s return.

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

  1. What spiritual disciplines or practices do you have in place to help you lay aside old attitudes and behavior that are inconsistent with having been spiritually born into Christ?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
