Sunday School Lesson December 24, 2023

Sunday School Lesson December 24, 2023

Subject: The Salvation Expressed in God’s Name

The Point: Everyone who calls on the name of Jesus will be saved.

Scriptures: Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:18-25

Study The Bible: Isaiah 7:14

1). With the name Immanuel, God promises to be with us.

  1. Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: See, the virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.

Lasting truths from: Isaiah 7:14

* With the name Immanuel, God promised to be with us.

* Our hope is due to the gracious initiative of the Lord.

* The hope of God’s people, in both the New Testament and the Old Testament, is in the name that God told Isaiah to give his son—Immanuel.

2). Jesus is the One who saves us.

Matthew 1:18-21

  1. The birth of Jesus Christ came about this way: After his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, it was discovered before they came together that she was pregnant from the Holy Spirit.
  2. So her husband, Joseph, being a righteous man, and not wanting to disgrace her publicly, decided to divorce her secretly.
  3. But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
  4. She will give birth to a son, and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Lasting truths from: Matthew 1:18-21

*  Jesus is the One who saves us.

* Jesus calls each one of us to play a role in His plan to spread the gospel to all peoples.

* In order to receive salvation from sin and death, all people everywhere must call upon the name of the Lord. The name that they must call upon is Jesus.

3). Jesus is the One who is with us.

Matthew 1:22-25

  1. Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
  2. See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated “God is with us.”
  3. When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her
  4. but did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son, And he named him Jesus.

Lasting truths from: Matthew 1:22-25

* Jesus is the One who is with us.

* The fact that Jesus is with us means that we can live lives of obedience to the commands of Christ.

* The truth that Jesus is Immanuel means that He is with us all throughout the year—not just at Christmas.

Live It Out

  1. What does it mean for God to be with us?
  2. How does the name Jesus remind us of God’s saving work?
  3. Since Jesus is Immanuel, how does that impact the way you live your life, interact with family and friends, or make big decisions about your future?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”

“If this lesson has been a blessing to you, leave us a comment.”
