Subject: The Majesty of God’s Name

The Point: God is majestic and exalted by everything He does.

Scriptures: Psalm 138:1-8

Study The Bible: Psalm 138:1-3

1). God’s name is exalted because of His love and truth.

  1. I will give you thanks with all my heart; I will sing your praise before the heavenly beings.
  2. I will bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your constant love and truth. You have exalted your name and your promise above everything else.
  3. On the day I called, you answered me; you increased strength within me.

Lasting truths from: Psalm 138:1-3

* God’s name is exalted because of His love and truth.

* God loves to hear our praise.

* All of life is meant to be an act of worship.

2). God’s name is exalted because of His promises.

Psalm 138:4-5

  1. All the kings on earth will give you thanks, Lord, when they hear what you have promised.
  2. They will sing of the Lord’s ways, for the Lord’s glory is great.

Lasting truths from: Psalm 138:4-5

*  God’s name is exalted because of His promises.

* God desires for His glory to be made known among all peoples.

* God’s great work is fulfilled in making the name of Christ known to all people.

3). God’s name is exalted because of His care for the humble.

Psalm 138:6-8

  1. Though the Lord is exalted, he takes note of the humble; but he knows the haughty from a distance.
  2. If I walk into the thick of danger, you will preserve my life from the anger of my enemies. You will extend your hand; your right hand will save me.
  3. The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me. Lord, your faithful love endures forever; do not abandon the work of your hands.

Lasting truths from: Psalm 138:6-8

* God’s name is exalted because He cares for the humble.

* Humility is both a duty and virtue for followers of Christ.

* From the beginning of our lives as believers to the end, God is gracious to us.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

  1. What is wholehearted worship?
  2. How is God’s name connected to His love and truth?
  3. How is God’s name connected to His promises?
  4. How are God’s name and promises connected to the work of missions?
  5. What does is look like to depend upon the grace of God from the beginning to the end of the Christian life?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
