Subject: Set Apart In The Way We Live

The Point: We grow in Christlikeness as we walk in truth and love.

Scriptures: 2 John 1-9

Study The Bible: 2 John 1-4

1). Walk in truth.

  1. The elder: To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth — and not only I, but also all who know the truth —
  2. because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us forever.
  3. Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
  4. I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, in keeping with a command we have received from the Father.

Lasting truths from: 2 John 1-4

*  Christians are called to love one another in truth.

* God’s grace and mercy are the foundation for our peace.

* God has commanded us to walk in the truth.

2). Walk in love.

2 John 5-6

  1. So now I ask you, dear lady — not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning — that we love one another.
  2. This is love: that we walk according to his commands. This is the command as you have heard it from the beginning: that you walk in love.

Lasting truths from: 2 John 5-6

*  Love for one another in the body of Christ is not an option.

* To love one another is consistent with the whole narrative of Scripture.

* Obedience to God is an act of love toward others.

3). While in obedience to the teachings of Christ.

2 John 7-9

  1. Many deceivers have gone out into the world; they do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
  2. Watch yourselves so that you don’t lose what we have worked for, but that you may receive a full reward.
  3. Anyone who does not remain in Christ’s teaching but goes beyond it does not have God. The one who remains in that teaching, this one has both the Father and the Son.

Lasting truths from: 2 John 7-9

* There are many false teachers inside and outside the church seeking to lead people astray.

*  To believe in the incarnation is basic to Christian faith.

* The only way to know if we are right with God is to believe in and abide in Christ.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

  1. What’s the relationship between truth and love?
  2. How can you love your brother or sister in Christ better?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
