Subject: Set Apart by Christ
The Point: In Christ, we are dead to sin but alive to God.
Scriptures: Romans 6:5-14
Study The Bible: Romans 6:5-7
1). In Christ, we are set free from sin’s grip.
- For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of his resurrection.
- For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin,
- since a person who has died is freed from sin.
Lasting truths from: Romans 6:5-7
* Our baptism symbolizes our death with Christ.
* Just as Christ died and rose again, so also we will be raised to new life.
* Now that we are united with Christ the power of sin has no authority over us.
2). In Christ, we are set apart with the promise of eternal life.
Romans 6:8-11
- Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him,
- because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over him.
- For the death he died, he died to sin once for all time; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
- So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Lasting truths from: Romans 6:8-11
* The Christian has died with Christ to the old self.
* Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead and declared the Lord.
* If we are in Christ we now live for God and must resist sin.
3). In Christ, we are set apart to live in righteousness.
Romans 6:12-14
- Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, so that you obey its desires.
- And do not offer any parts of it to sin as weapons for unrighteousness. But as those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.
- For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.
Lasting truths from: Romans 6:12-14
* Sin is no longer the master over believers.
* Christians are empowered to offer their bodies as instruments of righteousness.
* Christians are no longer servants of sin.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- Where does the believer draw strength to resist temptation?
- What does it look like to die with Christ?
- What is the Holy Spirit’s part in sanctification? Believer’s part?
- How can you work to avoid temptation?
- How can believers avoid overemphasizing God’s grace?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
