Subject: The Source of Temptation
The Point: We have no one to blame but ourselves when we fall into sin.
Scriptures: James 1:13-18
Study The Bible: James 1:13
God does not tempt anyone to sin.
1). God does not temp anyone to sin.
- No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God,” since God is not tempted by evil, and he himself doesn’t tempt anyone.
Lasting truths from: James 1:13
* We should never suggest God is enticing us into sin.
* God cannot be overcome by temptation to sin.
* God always intends His work in our lives to grow us, never to defeat us.
2). Temptation begins with our own sin nature.
James 1:14-15
- But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire.
- Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
Lasting truths from: James 1:14-15
* Temptation begins within our own evil desires.
* Lingering in a tempting situation can be dangerous to our spiritual walks.
* Sin always seeks to lead us to death.
3). Everything good comes from God, including the word of truth.
James 1:16-18
- Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters.
- Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
- By his own choice, he gave us birth by the word of truth so that we would be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Lasting truth from: James 1:16-18
* God is the source of every good and perfect gift.
* God does not change with respect to His nature or purpose.
* God’s Word can guide us to new life in Jesus.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- What is the difference between a trail and a temptation? Why do you think people are often o quick to blame people or circumstances for their own failures?
- The Bible tells us we are new creatures in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17), yet sin remains a constant challenge for us. How does knowing our own weaknesses actually help us battle temptation?
- How does recognizing that blessings and trails come from our unchanging heavenly Father give us confidence to live well? What purpose does God have for the process?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
