Sunday School Lesson March 19, 2023
Subject: Jesus Gave Me Grace and Forgiveness
The Point: Jesus took my guilt and set me free.
Scriptures: John 8:2-11
Study The Bible: John 8:2-6a
1). I had broken God’s law and deserved punishment.
- At dawn he went to the temple again, and all the people were coming to him. He sat down and began to teach them.
- Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center.
- “Teacher,” they said to him, “this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.
- In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
6a. They asked this to trap him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse him.
Lasting truths from: John 8:2-6a
* People should be loved, not used for our own purposes.
* Jesus is the lover of souls, even those who need His grace and forgiveness.
* The law reveals our sin. Jesus shows grace and forgiveness.
2). All of us guilty of sinning against God.
John 8:6b-9
6b. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger.
- When they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them, “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.”
- Then he stooped down again and continued writing on the ground.
- When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only he was left, with the woman in the center.
Lasting truths from: John 8:6b-9
* People are quick to judge other’s sin when they are unqualified to be the judge.
* All of us are guilty of sinning against God.
* We should leave ultimate judgment in the hands of God.
3). Jesus showed me grace and forgave me.
John 8:10-11
- When Jesus stood up, he said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
- “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus. “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”
Lasting truth from: John 8:10-11
* We answer to a higher authority than people.
* We must believe in Jesus for our sins to be forgiven.
* Turning to Jesus implies turning from a life dominated by sin.

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- What does it feel like to have your sins exposed by others?
- How do we acknowledge to God our guilt as sinner?
- Do you find it easier to forgive others or forgive yourself? Why?
- Why is forgiveness based in the Person of Christ?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
