Sunday School Lesson January 29, 2023
Subject: Does It Bring Conviction?
The Point: The voice of God seeks to convict us of the truth.
Scriptures: Acts 2:32-41
Study The Bible: Acts 2:32-36
1). Christ was crucified and resurrected for our salvation.
- “God has raised this Jesus; we are all witnesses of this.
- Therefore, since he has been exalted to the right hand of God and has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit, he has poured out what you both see and hear.
- For it was not David who ascended into the heavens, but he himself says: ‘The Lord declared to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand
- until I make your enemies your footstool.” ‘
- Therefore let all the house of Israel know with certainty that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
Lasting truths from: Acts 2:32-36
* God uses His Spirit, His people, and His Word to testify to the truth of who Jesus is and what He has done.
* Jesus’s resurrection and exaltation are evidence that His sacrifice was acceptable for the salvation of humanity.
2). The work of Christ calls for a response from us.
Acts 2:37-38
- “When they heard this, they were pierced to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”
- Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Lasting truths from: Acts 2:37-38
* When God’s truth is boldly proclaimed, God’s Spirit works to bring conviction.
* Faith and repentance are the foundation of salvation; baptism is an indication of salvation.
* God’s Spirit is given to all who receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
3). The right response to God’s conviction leads to salvation and obedience.
Acts 2:39-41
- For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call.
- With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt generation!”
- So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them.
Lasting truth from: Acts 2:39-41
* God’s message of salvation is for everyone.
* God wants to rescue people from the corrupted and perverted ways of this world.
* The Holy Spirit continues to convict people about sin, salvation, and right living.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- Many people are confused about repentance and baptism. How would you explain to someone the significance of these actions related to salvation?
- What evidence do you see that people have perverted God’s standards and rejected His truth?
- How have you seen God rescue people from the corrupt ways of this world?
- Where can God use you to work with His Spirit to speak to people about sin, forgiveness, and living according to God’s standards?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
