Subject: Valued by God

The Point: God values life and we should too.

Scriptures: Psalms 139:1-10,13-16

Study The Bible: Psalm 139:1-6

1). Life is sacred because God values us.

1. Lord, you have searched me and known me,
2. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; you understand my thoughts from far away.
3. You observe my travels and my rest; you are aware of all my ways.
4. Before a word is on my tongue, you know all about it, Lord.
5. You have encircled me; you have placed your hand on me.
6. This wondrous knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.

Lasting truths from: Psalms 139:1-6                              

*  God’s knowledge of His creatures is perfect and personal.

* Humans cannot fully grasp God’s omniscience.

* God’s awareness of us reflects His love and concern for us, God values us.

2). Life is sacred because God is with us.

Psalm 139:7-10

7. Where can I go to escape your Spirit?
8. If I go up to heaven, you are there, if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
9. If I fly on the wings of the dawn and settle down on the western horizon,
10. even there your hand will lead me; your right hand will hold on to me.

Lasting truths from: Psalm 139:7-10

* God is always with us no matter what our location.

* God does not abandon us or forget us.

* God was and is uniquely present in Jesus, His Son.

3). Life is sacred because God created us and has a plan for each of us.

Psalm 139:13-16

13. For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well.
15. My bones were not hidden from your when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
16. Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.

Lasting truth from: Psalm 139:13-16

* God is involved in our lives from the very beginning.

*  God has a plan for each person’s life.

* Christians should be concerned about the welfare of all fellow humans.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

1. When have you been most aware of God’s presence in your life?
2. When have you felt God was distant from you or absent in your life?
3. What is God’s plan for your life? How did you discern that plan?
4. How does God’s plan for your life impact your family? Your career? Your finances? Your friends?

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
