Sunday School Lesson November 6, 2022
Subject: Meditate on God’s Word
The Point: Saturating our minds with Scripture keeps us focused on the things of God.
The Passages: Psalm 1:1-6, Philippians 4:8
Study The Bible: Psalm 1:1-3
1). Meditating on Scripture provides blessing and delight.
- How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers!
- Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
- He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
Lasting truths from: Psalm 1:1-3
* Happiness is not a feeling or emotion but a life lived according to God’s Word.
* Meditating on the Word of God gives us the confidence to live righteously.
* Mediating on God’s Word helps us embrace the reason that God created us.
2). Meditating on Scripture helps us pursue righteous living.
Psalm 1:4-6
- The wicked are not like this; instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.
- Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgement, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
- For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.
Lasting truths from: Psalm 1:4-6
* Life without a relationship with God is meaningless.
* Scripture reveals God’s plan, the gospel, that will spare us from judgement.
* God cares for the righteous just as a good shepherd cares for his sheep.
3). Meditating on Scripture keeps us focused on the right thoughts.
Philippians 4:8
- Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.
Lasting truth from: Philippians 4:8
* Meditation on Scripture produces moral excellence.
* Meditation on Scripture will ultimately produce that which is praiseworthy.
* Meditation is more than just thinking about something, but focusing one’s mind on it.

- How does meditating on Scripture help you pursue righteousness in your life?
- What is the best way to keep your mind focused on those things that are excellent?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
