Sunday School Lesson August 28, 2022

Subject: Share Christ with Your Neighbor

The Point: We love our neighbors when we tell them about Jesus.

The Passages: John 1:40-49

Study The Bible: John 1:40-42

1). Love others by telling them about your experience with Christ.

  1. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him.
  2. He first found his own brother, Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated “the Christ”),
  3. and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

Lasting truths from: John 1:40-42

* Believers can and should share their testimonies of how Jesus has changed their lives.

* We should invite others to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

* God can change people and use them significantly to bless and be blessed if they will let Him.

2). Invite others to “come and see” about Jesus for themselves.

John 1:43-46

  1. The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Phillip and told him, “Follow me.”
  2. Now Phillip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.
  3. Phillip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
  4. “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Phillip answered.

Lasting truths from: John 1:43-46

* Followers of Jesus should seek to tell others about Jesus.

* Believers should seek to encourage others to come and meet Jesus themselves.

* Believers should not wait but begin early to invite others to know Jesus.

3). Trust God to work in the hearts of others.

John 1:47-49

  1. Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is and Israelite in whom there is not deceit.”
  2. “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Phillip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.
  3. “Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!”

Lasting truth from: John 1:47-49

* The believer is to passionately reason with others and seek to persuade others to come to know Christ.

*  The believer is to trust the Holy Spirit of God to bring others to salvation.

* As we are faithful to share Christ with others, Jesus is faithful to comfort and help people come to know Him.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:

  1. Identify by name others with whom you can share your testimony and determine a time to do so.
  2. What might it look like for you to invite others to “come and see” about Jesus for themselves?
  3. Pray for these and trust God to do His work in their lives to bring them to salvation.

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
