Subject: A Life of Love
The Point: Remaining in Christ means our relationships are marked by love.
The Passages: John 15:9-17
Study The Bible: John 15:9-11
1). Remain in Jesus’ love and experience His joy.
- “As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.
- If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
- I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
Lasting truths from: John 15:9-11
* Love for Jesus results in obedience to His commands.
* Obedience to Jesus’ commands results in joy.
* True joy comes from a relationship with Jesus.
2). Love calls for personal sacrifice.
John 15:12-14
- “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you.
- No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.
- You are my friends if you do what I command you.
Lasting truth from: John 15:12-14
* We should focus on what Jesus focused on the command to love one another.
* Love calls for personal sacrifice.
* The result of genuine love among Jesus’ followers is obedience to His commands.
3). Produce spiritual fruit by loving others.
John 15:15-17
- I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father.
- You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
- “This is what I command you: Love one another.
Lasting truth from: John 15:15-17
* When we listen to Jesus, we move from the slavery of sinners to the freedom of friends.
* Jesus tells us everything we need to know about God.
* Remaining in Jesus gives us the reward of answered prayer.
* To produce spiritual fruit, we must live our Jesus’ important command to love one another.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- How are love for Jesus and obedience to Him related?
- What changes in your life do you need to make so that you can remain obedient to Jesus?
- What actions will you take to show your sacrificial love for other Christians?
- Why should I focus my obedience to Jesus as the result of my sacrificial love for others?
- What will I do this week that will fulfill Jesus’ command to love one another?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
