Subject: A life of Humble Service
The Point: We reflect Christ when we serve others with humility.
The Passages: John13:3-10,14-16
Study The Bible: John 13:3-5
1). Jesus models humble service.
- Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, that he had come from God, and that he was going back to God.
- So he got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing, took a towel, and tied it around himself.
- Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around him.
Lasting truths from: John 13:3-5
* God gave Jesus all authority.
*. Jesus came from God and returned to God.
* Jesus humbly served His disciples by washing their feet.
2). Jesus forgives and makes us completely clean.
John 13:6-10
- He came to Simon Peter, who asked him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
- Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.”
- “You will never wash my feet,” Peter said . Jesus replied, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.”
- Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.”
- “One who has bathed,” Jesus told him, “doesn’t need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.”
Lasting truth from: John 13:6-10
* Jesus is patient with us even when we fail to understand.
* Repenting of your sins and accepting Jesus’ words cleanses us completely.
* Physical actions often represent deeper spiritual truths.
3). Jesus calls us to humbly serve others.
John 13:14-16
- So, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
- For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done for you.
- “Truly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.
Lasting truth from: John 13:14-16
* Jesus calls us to humbly serve others.
* When we say “amen,” it means “we agree.”
* Jesus’ view of serving is far different than society’s view.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions:
- What are some ways you can model humble service to your family, friends, and /or fellow believers?
- What did you learn about Jesus from the verses we studied?
- What areas of your life do you need to change so that you can be “completely clean”?
- What should be your response if you, like Peter, don’t understand what Jesus is saying to you?
- What will it mean for you this week to serve others with humility?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
