Subject: The Basis for Confidence
The Point: Confidence comes from trusting God.
The Passages: Genesis 12:1-8
Study The Bible: Genesis 12:1-3
1). God calls us to follow Him.
- The Lord said to Abram: Go from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.
- I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.
- I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
Lasting truths from: Genesis 12:1-3
* God’s call to follow Him may include leaving what is familiar to us.
* Obedience to God’s call will bring blessing to our lives.
* God can multiply the impact of our faithfulness beyond what we can imagine.
2). We respond to God’s call with obedience.
Genesis 12:4-6
- So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.
- He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated, and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,
- Abram passed through the land to the site of Shechem, at the oak of Moreh. (At that time the Canaanites were in the land.)
Lasting truth from: Genesis 12:4-6
* God’s will for our lives often includes others.
* Obeying God requires a serious commitment to Him.
* We should obey God even when we do not understand the full implications of doing so.
3). A relationship of trust leads us to worship.
Genesis 12:7-8
- The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.
- From there he moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. He built an altar to the Lord there, and he called on the name of the Lord.
Lasting truth from: Genesis 12:7-8
* Some of God’s promises to us may not be completed during our lifetimes.
* Experiencing a special moment with God should lead us to worship Him.
* The longer we follow the Lord faithfully the more we should want to worship Him.
Live It Out
We experience forgiveness through Jesus Christ when we confess our sin and place our trust in Him. He is the One who makes forgiveness possible because of His sacrificial death on the cross. His blood covers our sin and we enjoy fellowship with the Lord. Now, we can go to Him whenever we are in need of forgiveness.
- Think of a time when God called you to follow Him in a special way. What lesson did you learn or are you learning from that call?
- Why should we follow God’s commands even when we do not fully understand them? Can you think of times when you did this and God rewarded you for your faith?
- How would your life be different if you more intentionally incorporated aspects of worship regularly, besides in your Sunday worship?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
