Subject: Sure of a Relationship
The Point: Your relationship with God is reflected in how you live.
The Passages: 1 John 2:3-11, 15-17
Study The Bible: 1 John 2:3-6
1). We are to walk in obedience to God’s commands.
- This is how we know that we know him: If we keep his commands.
- The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn’t keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
- But whoever keeps his word , truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him.
- The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.
Lasting truths from: 1 John 2:3-6
* If we know and love the Lord then we will keep His commands and do what He says.
* You cannot say that you love the Lord when you disobey Him by your actions.
* When we do what Jesus did then we will live like Jesus.
2). We are to walk in love for others.
1 John 2:7-11
- Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old command that you have had from the beginning. The old command is the word you have heard.
- Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
- The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister is in the darkness until now.
- The one who loves his brother or sister remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him.
- But the one hates his brother or sister is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he’s going; because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
Lasting truth from: 1 John 2:7-11
* The testimony of a Christian reflects how we not only love God but also how we love others.
* Love is the defining quality of a follower of Jesus Christ.
* As children of God, we now practice walking in light and not in darkness.
3). We are to walk in the will of God, not the ways of the world.
1 John 2:15-17
- Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
- For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world.
- And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.
Lasting truth from: 1 John 2:15-17
* People should see a difference in our lives because of the One we profess to believe and follow.
* We cannot love both God and the things of the world.
*. The things of the world draw us away from God.
* We would do well to imitate the life of faith that says no to the temptations of the moment in order to fully obey the will of God that lasts forever.
Live It Out
We experience forgiveness through Jesus Christ when we confess our sin and place our trust in Him. He is the One who makes forgiveness possible because of His sacrificial death on the cross. His blood covers our sin and we enjoy fellowship with the Lord. Now, we can go to Him whenever we are in need of forgiveness.
- How is our relationship with God demonstrated by the way in which we live?
- How does obeying God’s commands enable us to love others?
- How does our testimony reflect that we are walking with God rather than compromising with the world?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
