Sunday School Lesson July 18, 2021
Subject: Sufficient In Christ Alone
The Point: God provides all that we need as we pursue Christ daily.
The Passages: Revelation 3:14-22
Study The Bible: Revelation 3:14-17
1). We can please both Jesus and the world.
- “Write to the angel of the church in Laodicea: Thus says the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the originator of God’s creation:
- I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot.
- So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth.
- For you say, ‘I’m rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,’ and you don’t realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
Lasting truths from: Revelation 3:14-17
* Jesus is the only true judge of our spiritual condition.
* We can become so worldly minded that we are of no heavenly good.
* Jesus desires a church that is refreshing like the water of Colossae or healing like the water of Hierapolis, but not lukewarm like Laodicea.
2). Accept God’s loving discipline and repent.
Revelation 3:18-19
- I advise you to buy from me gold refined in the fire so that you may be rich, white clothes so that you may be dressed and your shameful nakedness not be exposed, and ointment to spread on your eyes so that you may see.
- As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. So be zealous and repent.
Lasting truth from: Revelation 3:18-19
* God disciplines those He loves.
* Trusting in ourselves produces self-sufficiency.
* Trusting in God produces zeal and repentance.
3). Seek intimate fellowship with Christ.
Revelation 3:20-22
- See! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
- To the one who conquers I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,
- Let anyone who has ears to hear listen to what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Lasting truth from: Revelation 3:20-22
* Those who are complacent need time in the presence of Jesus.
* Jesus is willing to fellowship with those who invite Him into their lives.
* We will one day rule and reign with Christ in His kingdom.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this lesson respond to the following questions:
- How can you spot self-sufficiency and complacent in your own life?
- What are ways that you have experienced God’s discipline in your own life?
- What steps should a Christian take to invite Christ’s presence into his daily life?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
