Subject: The Work of the Holy Spirit
The Point: The Holy Spirit magnifies the work of Jesus.
The Passages: John 15:26-27, 16:7-15
Study The Bible: John 15:26-27
1). The Holy Spirit empowers us to proclaim Jesus.
- “When the Counselor comes, the one I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me.
- You also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
Lasting truths from: John 15:26-27
* God the Father and God the Son sent the Holy Spirit to us.
* The Holy Spirit bears witness to Jesus.
* The Holy Spirit enables believers to bear witness concerning Jesus.
2). The Holy Spirit convicts of sin.
John 16:7-11
- Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you.
- When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgement:
- About sin, because they do not believe in me;
- about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me:
- and about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
Lasting truth from: John 16:7-11
* The Holy Spirit’s coming was the next step in God’s plan after Jesus completed His ministry.
* The Holy Spirit will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgement.
* The Spirit’s ministry includes both testifying to the truth and exposing the world’s lies.
3). The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus.
John 16:12-15
- “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.
- When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.
- He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
- Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.
Lasting truth from: John 16:12-15
* The Holy Spirit will guide us into all the truth we need for life.
* God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit work together to accomplish the plan of salvation.
* The Spirit’s primary’s purpose is to glorify Jesus, and He often does that through believers.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this lesson, respond to the following questions:
- In what sense does the Holy Spirit serve as a Counselor (15:26) to believers today? List as many ways as you can.
- How would you describe the Spirit’s conviction of the world about sin, righteousness, and judgement in your own words?
- Are you giving the proper time to the study of God’s Word such that the Spirit can profitably use that discipline in your life?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
