Subject: Joining God’s Work
The Point: Believers are to join God’s work in both the church and the world.
The Passages: John 15:1-8
Study The Bible: John 15:1-3
1). God expects believers to produce spiritual fruit.
- “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
- Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes, and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.
- You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.
Lasting truths from: John 15:1-3
* Jesus, no one else, is the true vine.
* God knows those who belong to Him and will separate those hanging on with no genuine connection.
* God knows those who belong to Him and will prune those who know Him to bear more fruit.
2). Believers produce spiritual fruit through their relationship with Jesus.
John 15:4-5
- Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.
- I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.
Lasting truth from: John 15:4-5
* Those who are not connected to Christ will dry up and produce no fruit.
* Jesus is the life-giving vine who produces spiritual fruit in our lives.
* We remain connected to Jesus by trusting in Him to produce His life in us.
3). God is glorified as believers produce spiritual fruit.
John 15:6-8
- If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
- If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.
- My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.
Lasting truth from: John 15:6-8
* Those who do not produce spiritual fruit are proving they are not connected to the vine.
* Those who are connected to Jesus, and His Word is remaining in them, have access to God in prayer.
* The Father is glorified as believers walk in discipleship and produce spiritual fruit.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this lesson, respond to the following questions:
- What are specific ways that your life brought glory to God this week?
- How can our group identify those who are struggling to bear fruit and help them begin a life of Christian discipleship?
- How connected is your prayer life? How could you strengthen your prayer life either by going deeper in your fellowship with Jesus or spending time His Word.
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. In Jesus’ name Amen.”
