Subject: Knowing God
The Point: Our relationship with God is strengthened as we encounter Him in His Word
The Passage: Psalm 119:17-24
Study The Bible: Psalm 119:17-18
1). We grow spiritually as we encounter God in His Word.
- Deal generously with your servant so that I might live; then I will keep your word.
- Open my eyes so that I may contemplate wondrous things from your instruction.
Lasting truths from: Psalm 119:17-18
- Real living is not bountiful outside of the realm of God’s Word.
- Our eyes need the Holy Spirit’s illumination to see the wonders of God’s Word.
- We grow stronger in our faith as we understand God’s Word more.
2). Knowing God through His Word helps us face opposition.
Psalm 119:19-22
- I am a resident alien on earth; do not hide your commands from me.
- I am continually overcome with longing for your judgements.
- You rebuke the arrogant, the ones under a curse, who wander from your commands.
- Take insult and contempt away from me, for I have kept your decrees.
Lasting truths from: Psalm 119:19-22
- We are not at home in this world but are yearning for our homeland.
- Desire for the Word of God is crucial in maintaining spiritual discipline.
- God will deal with those who oppose His people in His time and His way.
3). Knowing God through His Word helps us have His perspective.
Psalm 119:23-24
- Though princes sit together speaking against me, your servant will think about your statutes;
- your decrees are my delight and my counselors.
Lasting truths from: Psalm 119:23-24
- Those who stand on God’s Word may face opposition.
- Knowing God’s Word gives us His perspective.
- The Word of God guides us and advises us how to make better decisions in our lives.
Live It Out
As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions.
- As a Christian, when have you felt like you were living in a foreign land? If so, how did it affect you?
- How can you increase your delight or desire in the Word of God?
- What is the best way to stand against those who speak things to you that do not line up with God’s Word?
Closing Prayer:
“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, In Jesus’ name, Amen”
