Sunday School Lesson October 25, 2020

Subject: Our Commitment to Christ

The Point: Commit your whole life in trust and obedience to Christ.

The Passage: Mark 10:13-22

Study The Bible: Mark 10:13-16

1). Total commitment is demonstrated in our childlike trust in Christ.

  1. People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.
  2. When Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me, Don’t stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
  3. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”
  4. After taking them in his arms, he laid his hands on them and blessed them.

Lasting truths from Mark 10:13-16

  • Our values must align with those of Jesus.
  • We must realize the value children have in the life of the church.
  • We need to express total commitment to Christ through childlike trust.

2). Total commitment is demonstrated as we strive for obedience.

Mark 10:17-20

  1. As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
  2. “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him, “No one is good except God alone.
  3. You know the commandments: Do not murder, do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.”
  4. He said to him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”

Lasting truths from Mark 10:17-20

  • Eternal life is a noble pursuit.
  • God gave us His commands for our good.
  • WE must guard against false confidence regarding God’s standards.

3).  Total commitment is demonstrated when we follow Jesus wholeheartedly.

Mark 10:21-22

  1. Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
  2. But he was dismayed by this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.

Lasting truths from Mark 10:21-22

  • We can be rich in the world’s eyes but poor in God’s.
  • We can be poor in the world’s eyes but rich in God’s.
  • We need to allow nothing to get in the way of our commitment to Christ.

Live It Out

As you reflect on this session, respond to the following questions.

  1. Consider for a moment your closes relationships. What steps do you take to strengthen those relationships? How do such steps apply to your relationship with Christ?
  2. In what areas of your life would you say you display childlike faith? In what areas is it harder to trust God?
  3. Reflect thoughtfully on whether anything is getting in the way of your wholehearted commitment to Christ. If so, ask God to help you lay those things aside so that you may follow Him completely.

Closing Prayer:

“Dear God, I know I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died on the cross to forgive me of my sins and rose from the dead to give me new life. I’m sorry for all the wrong I’ve done and ask You to forgive me. I now accept Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for Your love, forgiveness, and a new life in Jesus Christ. From this day forward, I choose to follow You, In Jesus’ name, Amen”
