Miracle #17 – Jesus Heals a Man Unable to Speak
Matthew 9:32-34
• Matthew 9:32-33
As the blind men whose sight Jesus had restored left, a mute man was brought to Jesus. Jesus cast out the evil spirit and the mute began to speak. The Greek word for mute in this miracle is “kophos” which generally means a “speaking disability.” It makes us know that the cause of this malady was not organic, but oppression by an evil spirit.

Jesus called the devils out of the man and he spoke. The only cure for evil spirits is the power given to us in the name of Jesus.

The people marveled. No healings such as these had been performed by the prophets of Israel. The acknowledged “No healings such as these had been performed by Israel’s prophets.” Though they had never seen such miracles, they had been predicted by Isaiah.
• Isaiah 35:5-6
• Matthew 9:34

These influential men, the Pharisees, had a reputation for piety because of their strict observance of the Mosaic Law. They had decided that the power of Jesus must come from Satan, not God. We note that in Matthew Chapter 9 the Pharisees accuse Jesus of 4 different sins; 1) blasphemy, 2) immorality, 3) impiety and 4) demon possession. The reasons Jesus was attacked and accused by the Pharisees were:
1. Jesus by-passed their religious authority;
2. Jesus weakened their control over the people;
3. Jesus challenged their cherished beliefs and
4. Jesus exposed their insincere and selfish motives.
